Artist – Bill Withers
Electric Bass – Melvin Dunlap
Difficulty – Beginner/Intermediate
I always enjoy gigs where I get asked to play Bill Withers tunes (Lovely Day is another that gets called regularly), and Use Me is one that not only has a great groove but has a number of little details I really like.
Before we get into those, a key skill for us as bass players is being able to sit on an idea and only introducing small variations (which is more or less the definition of a groove) and this song is a fantastic study in that sense!
Details…the harmonics are a lovely little variation on adding octaves to a line, and the little rhythmic differences you see at the ends of the grooves are a great study in how to vary a line without losing it’s integrity.
