It might seem strange to see a dedication above a transcription, but this tune was very much transcribed with my father in mind, because he was the one that first introduced me to Thin Lizzy many years back as well as being a key source of support in my formative years.
Phil Lynott is a player who I sometimes feel doesn’t necessarily get the credit/plaudits he deserves…possibly because progressive titans Chris Squire (Yes) and Geddy Lee (Rush) also came along around the same time, but Lynott’s bass lines are well worth checking out (if this line is a little much, go and take a look at Dancing In The Moonlight!), they are canon for those wanting to go down the classic rock route.
There are various little details and variations throughout the track that mean that it’s not as simple as learning one of each section and then that’s it. The devil really is in the details here! Other little things like the note lengths in the guitar solo towards the end, the notes are much shorter and punchier than I first thought! Honestly I just wish he was mixed a little higher, this was a tough transcription assignment!
My pick chops are nowhere close to being able to play this so I’m using fingers :P Lynott’s bass has that characteristic pick attack but it also sounds like it’s been put through something like a valve amp, so I’ve put my MXR M80 into the signal chain and put less of the overdriven signal into the mix.
