The ‘Rapture’ album is one of those records that is a study in exceptional bass work. Bass credits on the record include Freddie Washington, Will Lee, Jimmy Haslip, David Washington and Neil Stubenhaus, by any measure an A-list set! This specific tune has always been the standout for me, primarily because of that incredible verse groove! Harmonically relatively simple, it’s beautifully executed and provides the real propulsion for the song. The ‘stings’ (notated as triplets on the chart) are a challenge to get nice and even (and can result in sore fingers with a lot of practice) but they really make the line and are really worth you putting in the time.
The choruses and bridge are excellent study material for different methods of moving between chords, including chromatic approaches, approaching from the 5th and others.
