Artist – Chic
Electric Bass – Bernard Edwards
Difficulty - intermediate
Here we have one of my favourite Bernard Edwards bass lines (Dance Dance Dance, Le Freak, Everybody Dance and Strike Up The Band being others), and one that really highlights a couple of things I love about Bernards playing. The first is his ability to subtly modify his ideas without losing the integrity of the groove, another is his overall time feel and placement, his playing is much further forward within the beat than I originally thought and has a real ‘up on its toes’ quality to it.
One of the challenges with the verse is keeping the notes short and punchy without making them so short that they almost turn into percussive sounds, and take a close look at the last few pages of the transcription and get into the little fills that Bernard has tagged onto that main chorus groove. Vocabulary for days!
I don’t own a Stingray at this point so the closest I could get was my Fodera Monarch in dual coil mode, not quite the same thing but it gets closer to the ballpark than my P or Warwick.
Full signal chain is Fodera (dual coils, both pickups, passive tone rolled on 40%) – Cali76 compressor – Audient interface – Garageband (platinumverb plugin).
