Artist – Chaka Khan
Electric Bass – Anthony Jackson
Difficulty – Advanced
Anthony Jackson has been a personal bass hero of mine for some time now, and I recorded the video for this song as part of a recent studio session several weeks before he sadly passed on to the great gig in the sky. I did my level best to do Anthony’s line and performance justice but I can only ever get close, Anthony’s delivery, phrasing and sound….he was very much a ‘one of one’.
There are some amazing cuts on the ‘Naughty’ record (I’ll be releasing another transcription from that record for my subscribers soon), but Move Me No Mountain is one of the absolute standouts, the introduction has some fantastic ideas (that descending sequential C minor triad idea…), which I’ll also be getting into in a lesson soon.
In the meantime, enjoy this transcription and take in the incredible artistry of one of the all-time greats of the electric bass. I’ve transcribed this for 5 string bass, but it’s possible to play on the 4 string if you adopt the tuning Anthony used on the Naughty record, C-F-Bb-Eb.
I recorded this one on my Fodera Monarch, with the pickups set to single coil mode and the passive tone almost wide open to try and get close to that bell-like top end of AJs sound.
Full signal chain is Fodera (single coil, passive tone 90%) – Avalon U5 DI – Warwick Hellborg pre/power/2x12/1x15.
Rest In Peace Anthony. You were the greatest.
