Adventure Of A Lifetime

Coldplay

Artist – Coldplay

Electric Bass – Guy Berryman

Difficulty – Beginner

While I’ve never been hugely into Coldplay, I got called to play this song on a gig last year and it was one of those tunes that unexpectedly sticks with you and becomes one that you really enjoy playing. While transcribing the tune properly for you all, I noticed a few details I had missed when I originally pulled it together, including the fact that Guy Berryman appears to be hammering on the notes moving into the Amin bar of the main groove (see bars 11-12 in the transcription) rather than articulating them all separately, I tried recording both ways of playing the line and I’m sure it’s hammered on. I’d also missed the cool little melodic idea in bars 59-60, an line that just adds a little ‘something something’ to the bridge. It sounded to me as though there was a little tube saturation on the bass signal so I put my MXR M80 into the chain but I rolled the distortion blend down lower than usual, this had the effect of adding a little drive to the signal without really saturating it.

Signal chain was P bass (tone rolled on 90%) – Cali76 compressor – MXR M80 – Audient interface – Garageband (platinumverb plugin).
